Many of us have heard stories of exorcism & possession, either through our religious beliefs, media outlets, or Hollywood blockbuster films. When we think about demonic possession and exorcism, films such as the 1973 box office hit, The Exorcist and The Exorcism of Emily Rose hit film of 2005 automatically come to mind. What most people fail to realize is that these films are based on actual accounts, most of which have been sensationalized beyond the truth. Luckily the names, locations, and specific facts are filtered, as to protect the individual and families anonymity.  Nevertheless, these films are based on actual accounts, perhaps not as visually frightening as depicted on the silver screen; the actual events themselves can be and many times are just as disturbing.

One such account, which has been an intriguing topic of research for me, was the actual exorcism of Anneliese Michel; a young college student from Klinenberg, Bavaria Germany, whose family and friends as well as her Minister claimed that she had been possessed by a legion of demonic entities. Although this case had gone to trial due to her death on July 1^st 1976, which the jury found to be due to dehydration and malnutrition, there still remained many strange and so called supernatural events which had occurred during the time of her claims of possession. Many films hold some basic truth to them, but none more so than actual story of Anneliese Michel, which was depicted in The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Many of us have an inherent fear of demonic possession, whether it is through what we know of the religious implications or just Hollywood giving us a head spinning tale of terror, no pun intended. Nevertheless, again we come across the old age question, is it fact or fiction? Was the exorcism of Anneliese Michel a fabrication of wanting to provoke and rebel, while taking pointers from an old classic like The Exorcist? Or perhaps this case was merely based on schizophrenia which went a bit beyond our basic understanding of the mental affliction. Then again maybe it’s just a case of plain `ol demonic possession! Whatever the claims may have been, and whether one believes in the exorcisms of demonic entities, the facts still remain. Those being that, Anneliese Michel’s minister was involved in a ritualistic style exorcism, the body of Anneliese Michel, although deemed dehydrated and malnourished prior to the time of her death, still had the strength to speak, growl and scream in such a way that it sounded inhuman.
